Why a Comfort Doll Project?

One simple idea, one piece of Art,this is where my idea was born.....I saw a beautiful crazy quilted art doll on an online group and couldn't get her out of my head so I ordered one .

Linda Feuge was the creator of this beauty which you see in the background. My pure joy I felt upon receiving her led me to realize the power this beautiful cloth creation could have on a woman. If I felt so happy owning this piece of art,I could imagine what a woman who may never even know such things exist would feel owning one of her own.

There are many charity groups that Artists of any medium can join, many of which I donate crazy quilt blocks or items to. However, I haven't seen art donations going toward battered women shelters.

They may be out there, I just haven't been aware of any. When Crazy Quilting International, an online group asked about projects for charity causes, I raised my hand to collect cloth "Healing","Spirit","Comfort" dolls to be gathered by the dozen and sent to Women's shelter's. Not going over too well, I took this project on myself. I believe there is a need to be filled.

Jo Newsham is a dear friend from New Zealand who collected several dolls to distribute there. If anyone wants to collect and send to their country and would like the tags I attach to each doll just email me and I would be happy to share it with you.

Please know that anyone who donates a doll can submit a name of a shelter in their town/state/country, to receive a dozen Comfort Dolls when available. If your state has already received a dozen dolls, I will put it on a list fora future shipment.

Inspiration behind project:
Unlike Jo, I had a short confrontation with physical abuse in my late teens. Thank goodness I had a supportive family to guide me home without further harm. It was the most frightening time in my life, and as the taxi made it's way to the airport and the miles between fear and freedom widened, I felt myself getting stronger and saw a bright future.I knew I had seen the bottom and the only way to go was up. I thought I was the only one who experienced this trauma.I was young , inexperienced, and naive. Embarrassment kept me from revealing my horrid mistake. Unknowingly, just like myself, many women are taken down this path daily. This experience can leave you with low self esteem and the feeling of failure.Fortunately I have found my Prince Charming and life is good.
Unfortunately, many women aren't so lucky.
I know some may think making dolls to give to a woman who has just been beaten, raped, or abused in some way is like putting a band-aid on an amputation. Well, I see it as sending a message of hope, love, and encouragement. A gentle hug,a smile,a nudge to go forward and see there is sunshine behind the mountain.

Imagine a woman being handed a beautiful handmade doll with a message of hope attached. This doll ,from a stranger whom she will never meet, yet makes this connection of love and caring from one heart to another. A stranger who can imagine, if not know firsthand where she has been and hoping she will have brighter days ahead. The woman carries this doll in her purse, pocket, or perhaps pinned to her lapel, knowing someone cared enough to think of her. When she needs strength, she strokes it or admires it and her lips turn up with a smile and her heart warms. Yes, I am a dreamer but I do think this will happen. Actually I KNOW this will happen. Won't you join me?

If anyone wants to create a "Comfort doll", please email me at angell100@comcast.net. I will collect dolls within the US,and hopefully find someone in each country to collect them because this is a worldwide cause. I won't dwell on details, but in the US, every 15 seconds a woman is abused. With our current poor economy, the statistics for abuse increases.

Comfort doll specifications: 6" max size (smaller preferred) doll of any medium. It may have a face or be plain, any color, any shape, embellishing such as beading, sequins, and charms need to be sewn on very securely please. Crazy quilting, Fimo faces, painted, cross stitch, felted, etc is all wonderful and welcome. You may choose any pattern you desire or make your own.I add a message to each doll, but feel free to add a sentiment of your own.
There are many free cloth doll patterns online. Look under "goddess "too, they have wonderful simple shapes to embellish easily.

Thank you for spreading a bit of comfort to those in need. This will be an ongoing project.

You may email for address to send dolls.

A little update

Hi everyone. As you probably have noticed, I have fallen behind in the mailings of the Comfort Doll project. Not to worry, I'm awake now .....
and got caught up and will be mailing out 7 dozen this week. Two dozen went out last week. We are up to 70 dozen, can you believe it?

I wanted you to know that the address I had on this blog is a valid one. It was removed for security reasons and if you need to send dolls to me, just email for the address and I will get it to you.

If you have a dozen or more dolls you want to send to a specific place, I will mail you comfort doll cards for each doll and the letter I send with each shipment then you can send them directly to the shelter. This will save on double postage . Thank you for your cooperation.

I will be posting new doll arrivals this week. I just wanted you to know the project is still going strong and I'm sure it will continue to bring joy to many women.

Thank you all for who you are and what you do.

Group hug!

Your dolls are fantastic and it was wonderful to read about your venture. My pal and generous Comfort Doll donor, Judith McCarthy gave me a heads up on your project. Thanks Judy.

I had received many letters about our Comfort Doll project and wanted to share with you one woman's efforts to help spread the work. Barb Kobe posted this on her blog, "The Art of Healing Dolls".
Browse around and see the amazing dolls and read the stories. How inspiring!

New blog look and letter from shelter.

Please excuse me while I am experimenting with a new look for the blog. I thought I would update it a bit. I think each of you donors and those helping spread the word of the Comfort Doll project are angels and when I found this calming background with the wings from Itkupilli, I thought it would be nice for this blog. I haven't had much time to spend on the header, so please be patient as I try to add our logo (doll image) to it.

In the mean time, you have received another thank you from the shelter, "My Sister's Place", in Washington DC. Enjoy, you deserve it.....:-)

30 dolls shipped to Comfort Cottage

I received a request for dolls to go to Comfort Cottage in Decatur Illinois. Kathy Lipe contacted me with a request for women in need of some hugs. I was having a hard time finding a place to accept the last 2 dozen dolls when this request came in. How could I not see where these dolls were meant to go?
Dozen # 56 & #57 plus these 6 dolls will be sent to the Comfort Cottage.

This made me rethink and restructure the Comfort Doll project. Since it is very hard sometimes to make contact with shelters, I have decided to let you all dictate where the dolls should go. If you know of a shelter, and know their contact info, email it to me and I will line them up with dolls. The limit will be two dozen, even though this current shipment was 30. I will ship to shelters in all states. For example, if there is a request for 3 shelters in IN, I will ship one batch to IN and wait for another state in need instead of shipping all to IN so again, each state will receive more dolls.

I would like your input on this matter. If anyone feels this is not a good way to operate, please let me know. Since all 50 states have received a dozen dolls, it makes sense to now deliver to those requesting or from you, the donors.
Thank you.

More Comfort Dolls from Judith

Judith McCarthy of South Au has sent more comfort dolls to share. Judith even slipped in "Fairy bread". It is calorie free! Thank you so much Judith!!!! :-)After the box of brownies from Donna and the toffee from Flo, the fairy bread was much needed to keep me on track. I have to share this story with you.....the dolls arrived on Monday afternoon as I was unloading flowers from my car to head off to more flower shops with my mother. I got the mail as I was driving off and told mom to open it as I drove. When she opened the large package from Judith, she was quite surprised to find such an assortment of beautiful dolls. One by one she unwrapped them and studied them, talking and telling me to look as she explained them. For a moment it seemed she was the child and I the mother,LOL. I didn't really get to see them until later that night, and as usual, Judith's doll faces amazed me, and all the varieties of shapes she creates. Truly jaw dropping.
I wish mom could see every doll that arrives as I do. She would be filled with warm fuzzies just as I am knowing you all take such precious time and care in creating these special dolls for abused women.

On our second time around for 50 states!!!!

Well ladies, We did it! We have now passed shipping a dozen Comfort Dolls to every state and a dozen plus to New Zealand. The 52nd dozen ships out in the morning. You all are amazing. I could never have imagined this project going so far. I hoped, and dreamt it would, but with life being so busy for everyone, I just thought it may have been put on a back burner. You all kept shipping your beautiful handmade dolls and with each package my heart warmed. I don't think there was a week that I didn't receive dolls.

My promise is that this project will continue for as long as people feel the need to share their talents and hearts with women who could use a ray of sunshine in their upset lives.
Thanks to all of you who spread the word, and for those who added the Comfort Doll button to their blog or web site. This helps so much. I also want to thank those of you who have taken on this project in your own country and state. You don't have to send to me to be included in this project. Also for those of you who spread the word among groups, and for the newly created Comfort Doll group. It is wonderful how we really are one big sisterhood willing to give from our hearts.

Thank you for your wonderful donations, and for the stamp. I will put it to good use and your dolls are sure to delight their recipients.

22 Comfort Dolls from Pamela Perry of KY

Pamela Perry of Kentucky sent 22 sweet pocket sized Comfort dolls last week. Each doll holds a Spring flower to greet her recipient. What a lovely and cheerful group. Thank you Pam :-) These are just lovely. I recently met Pamela through this project and learned of her website she created for her mother. Her story is heartbreaking. To know your mother doesn't recognize you, and is lost in her own world at times has got to be unbearable. I thank Pam for this site, she did not create it to ask for pity. It is to educate us about Alzheimer's. Among many things, I learned that the color chosen to represent this illness is purple. Imagine that! My favorite color. I took this as a message, a "heads up" if you will.
Pamela will be walking for the cause in September, and I hope to create a few purple items to donate and help raise money for research. I invite you to visit her site if you can.
Taking time to make 22 dolls for this project while having her hands full with family, shows the size of her heart.
I know each of you steal away precious time to create dolls for the women of the shelters, and I thank you all. Gestures small and large toward causes such as these are much needed. You never know when it will be our time to need a little hug.

15 Comfort Dolls arrive from Veleta of OR

Veleta (Sammy) of OR has donated 15 more of her creations and collected treasures for the Abused Women in shelters who would needs a heartfelt token of love and comfort. Sammy generously gathers dolls from her collection and donates them even though it is tough to pass on a treasured item from a friend, Sammy knows they will go to someone who truly needs them. This is quite a sweet and generous action Veleta, thank you so much for your gathering of love.

**Sammy is a phenominal beader among other artful ventures, and I wanted to share with you, this gorgeous beaded watch she had tucked in the bottom of the box for me.As my eyes took in the beauty of each doll I removed from the box and held, imagine my gasp when I discovered the watch.
Almost too much to absorb in one sitting. You know a few tears fell as I imagined a gal packing up some of her favorite things to donate and then to slip in a surprise for me as well.

I love sea themed anything, and this watch is unbelieveable. This is just another example of the giving heart of Sammy. I can't imagine the hours it took to create this. I do know it is a priceless treasure to me. Thank you for everything Sammy, your giving spirit certainly shines in everything you do.

Thank you letter from MN shelter

I wanted to share this letter I just received from the shelter in MN which received the 37th dozen. They have a unique way of storing the Comfort Dolls from you until they are needed~~~~~

My name is Kathleen and I am the shelter manager at Some Place Safe, a domestic violence shelter in Fergus Falls MN.
We received the dolls last week and are delighted to have them in our shelter. They are a wonderful addition to our advocacy possibilities. They really will "spread smiles" to victims and advocates alike! We have a small tree in our offices and the dolls will inhabit the branches, until someone "needs" one. Thank you again.
Kathleen
